A route read from its file: Saturday, leaving at 13:00, with the showers it meets on the way home hatched on the map. A real loop on a recorded October forecast, read by the same engine as the app.

What happens to the file

  • The track becomes a point every 250 metres, each with its distance, elevation, the gradient under it and the compass bearing you'll be riding on.
  • The climb is counted from the original track, lightly smoothed, so the headline metres agree with your head unit.
  • Your arrival time at each point comes from your usual average speed, slowed on the climbs and by a headwind, quicker downhill and with the wind behind you.
  • At each point, the forecast is read at that arrival time: wind, rain, temperature, and whether it's light.

Where routes come from

Any route planner that exports GPX, TCX or FIT works: export the file and open it in Velvind. A Ride with GPS link can be pasted in, and routes you've saved in Strava come over when you connect (how that works). In the web planner you can also draw a route on the map.

Once it's in

The route opens on Now: the ride if you leave this minute. Choose another start and the whole ride re-reads at once, with nothing new to download. ⚡ marks the kindest start over the next nine days (how it's chosen). Add the ride, and Velvind checks its forecast every 15 minutes and tells you once if it turns.
